Encouraging Visibility
Almost all major decisions around your career are made in rooms you're not in. Whether that's a decision around a promotion, raise, or if you get first dibs on a project. It's absolutely crucial that the people in that room (usually your manager, other leads, or even HR) are aware of your name and what you bring to the table.
Now that you're a manager, it's important that you help your direct reports and team as a whole gain visibility. While that seems daunting, it's more low-effort than you realize. Most of the time, it boils down to sharing wins through a company chat or mentioning it to your own manager.
ways to spotlight your Team:
Did your direct report's latest project perform well or have a brand new element you're testing? Share that in a company chat or highlight it in a report.
Did your direct report just complete a stretch project? Share that in a company chat or mention it to your manager.
If your direct report has a certain skill set or interest that isn't being served on your own team, mention it to your peers. Maybe there's a collaboration opportunity available.
If the win is something really worth sharing, ask your direct report to put it on their LinkedIn page – such as a well-written article or a recently completed certificate.
If your team had a big win (ex. Within your first 30 days, 18 of your articles are on page one of Google), share that in a company chat.
Does your company have a written public record like 15Five? Put in some shoutouts now and then. It can even be for things like them being a good team player or leaning into a new task with gusto.
